With how vast the ocean is, many people question why we need aquaculture projects like Perciformes in the first place. Combining our ever-growing worldwide population with an expanding demand for seafood leads to immense pressure put on our oceans. Although aquaculture is growing faster than any other animal producing sector, only 8% of the production is dedicated to culturing marine finfish (FAO, 2018). This is a concern because the majority of the seafood market demand is for marine finfish. Projects like Perciformes that are committed to culturing marine finfish in an environmentally sustainable manner will help fulfill the growing demand for marine finfish and relieve pressure on the already exploited wild caught fisheries.
